How to clean espresso machine filters?

I have a Mr. Coffee espresso machine the ecmp50, that comes with two metal filters one for 2-cup, one for 4-cup. Anyway, lately the water has been pooling on top of the filters (and coffee) causing it to clog and spurt and sputter out the side. I have taken the machine apart and cleaned it, delimed it and even checked the gasket which is in fine condition. The machine works fine with only the group head in (without the filter) but once you put the filter in you have the problem, AND there's residue that comes out only when you use the filter.

So I'm assuming there must be some gunk inside the filter. The filter is metal with only a tiny pinhole in the center where the coffee drips out, but I think there's an inner layer inside the metal between the inside & outside. Anybody have any clues as to how to de-gunk this? Soak it in something? Much thanks...
The answers are NOT in the very, very short owners manual, AND they don't sell replacement parts. Argh!!

try taking the metal basket out of the portafiler and brewing to see if the problem is the basket or the filter. If that doesn't work try using less coffee in the filter and see if that makes a difference.
