Don't Buy A Digital Point-and-Shoot Without Checking Out These 6 Features by DeeDee Dobson
There is an overwhelming number of digital cameras on the market, and after spending a few hours online trying to figure out which one to buy, your head is spinning with an overload of information. How do you select the best camera for you? What should you be looking for?
Make sure you take a closer look at these 6 features before adding that camera to your shopping cart:
Battery The type of battery is an important feature. Some cameras accept several power sources (proprietary rechargeable, AA, AC adapter, USB hookup), and this really is the best option. Relying solely on a camera-specific Rechargeable Battery is risky - even if you have backup batteries, there might be times when you are unable to charge them (traveling in remote areas without electricity, or even just in a country where the plugs are different). AA batteries on the other hand are everywhere, relatively inexpensive and easy to carry along. But they don't last very long, and the cost does add up. Having said that, they are ideal as a back up power source.
Zoom The more zoom the better, I say. The photos you can get with a good zoom can be spectacular, but make sure you look at the specs for the optical zoom, not the digital. The optical zoom works like the zoom on an "old fashioned" 35mm camera - it actually brings the lens closer to the subject. Digital zoom, however, takes your picture, blows it up and crops it, all inside the camera, resulting in a fuzzier image with far inferior picture quality.
Memory Even though all cameras these days accept a variety of memory cards, built-in memory is always an added asset. Imagine standing in front of the perfect shot with full or malfunctioning memory cards: internal memory to the rescue. Many of the compact cameras currently on the market have anywhere from a few MB to several GB of internal memory, so make sure you look for that in the specs when deciding on a new camera.
Mega Pixels The megapixel question is a tricky one. Some experts claim that more is better, and some that image quality actually gets worse with higher megapixels, saying that anything above 6 mps is more than enough for most users. Today, it's actually difficult to find a camera among the reputable brands with less than 5. Most of the new releases have between 8 and 12, which is plenty. The sensor in the camera also plays a huge part in image quality, but what's listed under Sensor in the specs of most cameras is not all that informative. Your best bet is to do your research and read as many reviews as you can.
Manual Exposure Control Even though most cameras will give you great results using the Auto or Program settings, having the option of controlling the exposure yourself is not only fun, it's crucial to achieving certain types of shots. A slow shutter speed will produce dreamlike shots of moving water, or those color streaks from car lights at night. A fast shutter will freeze action, like your kids or dog in mid-play. A wide aperture gives you a shallow depth of field, perfect for close-ups of flowers and other objects, or portraits where you want the subject sharp and the background out of focus. A small aperture gives you great depth of field for landscapes, or large groups of people, for example.
File Type Jpgs are everywhere. They are what you need to put your photos on your blog, flickr, Shutterfly, SmugMug, dotphoto, etc. The files are small, easy to upload, they load fast online, and you can get great prints from them. Which is why ipg is the file format that all compact cameras produce. There are, however, a few drawbacks to jpgs: it's a lossy format, meaning that every time you make changes to your photo and re-save it, you lose quality. Also, the jpgs coming out of your camera have also undergone some form of sharpening and other adjustments, which you have no control over.
The pros of RAW files are that since they contain pure data, the image quality is much better, it's a "non-lossy" format, and you get to control everything about the photo in the post-processing (whereas with jpgs, the camera usually applies sharpening, noise reduction, etc.). The cons are that you can't use the images right out of the camera, you need to have access to a computer and learn the software to convert them, and the file sizes are bigger than jpgs. If you're someone who likes to experiment with your pictures (and don't mind learning new programs), a camera that can shoot RAW is definitely something to consider.

A good camera, I prefer Canon.. I want a point and shoot digital where I have MANUAL (not AUTO) Shutter/Aperture-Priority control and a relatively wide angle lens (25-28 mm). Any Canons like this?
In compact cameras, Canon have the SX200 IS which has a starting Focal Length of 28mm. It has full manual controls,12x optical zoom and records HD video and has HDMI connectivity.
It's main negatives are...poor high ISO capability (like all compacts), no viewfinder and the flash automatically pops up whenever you turn the camera on (whether you want the flash or not). But, it's a great compact otherwise. Check out the review below...
Or another option is the SX10 IS, which has a focal range of 28-560mm (20x optical) and full manual controls. However, it's not exactly compact sized. Or, the G10 (28mm lens and 5x optical).
But, for better overall image quality and performance, especially better ISO capability, I'd recommend an entry level dSLR, instead. That way you can buy whichever lens you want.
