You have some choices. Let me explain in some detail:

1. Some network switches are PoE enabled. They cost more than those not PoE enabled. Some switches have all ports PoE enabled, others have some PoE enabled. Note which are PoE enabled if the switch does not have all PoE enabled. If you have a switch like this, you need no other equipment provided you plug into a PoE enabled switch port. Often people who will run many PoE devices use PoE enabled switches as they are the least costly.

2. PoE Injectors are used when the switch is not PoE enabled. You connecat a CAT5 patch cable from switch to PoE Injector and another CAT5 cable from other end of PoE injector to the end use device. The PoE injector requires electric power. For a very few number of PoE devices, this is the common and least costly way to achieve PoE delivery.

3. You must use straight CAT5 cable wired for 1000 Mbps speed (all 4 pairs used).
