Security has now joined this technology sending feed via IP network, allowing cameras to send feed directly to a 3G or smartphone. No matter how complex the technology is, it can be broken down and viewed via phone. This allows you to access and control any camera you own, no matter where you are at. You can be on one floor of your hotel while watching the cameras located 10 floors above you. It takes configuration and setup to perform these operations, and this article will explain how.

What you will need

The type of phone you need for mobile surveillance depends on the complexity of your needs. A simple phone that can access the internet can view snapshots of the cameras that are sent via email. More advanced phones such as smartphones may be necessary to view live video feed.

What you will need to configure

If all you require are snapshots to be sent to an email account then you should be able to configure this directly on the IP camera or video encoder responsible for producing the required snapshots. Alternatively you may be able to configure this through the network surveillance monitoring software that you are using. Configuration will also include determining when snapshots are to be sent. Common configuration options include snapshots be sent sequentially based on a predetermined schedule or sending snapshots based on motion triggered events. Motion triggered events can be configured based on the device's built-in motion detection features. Externally connected devices such as external motion sensors, door triggers or alarms may also be connected directly to an IP camera or video encoder which in turn may be configured as a trigger option for sending snapshots to an email account.

Configuring your system depends on what you want the system to do. For simple snapshots sent to your email you can directly configure the settings on the camera. You may decide how often, and when the snapshots are sent, or even set up different triggers such as movement or times. External devices such as alarms or motion detectors can also be programmed to set off the camera.

For live feed you have the option of not only sending the video feed to your phone, but to back up this data in a high quality format in addition to your phone media feed. This will allow you to have an idea of what you are seeing through the cameras, and if needed, you may log on at home to view suspicious activity in a higher quality format.

In most cases where video surveillance advertises mobile support, there is an "app for that" you may obtain through your cell phone carrier or a third party. This is a program on your phone that will allow you to access the feed from your camera to your mobile. Some software includes advanced options where you may control your camera from just about anywhere.

Additional configuration may be required

You may need to adjust your network setting to which the camera is connected to allow for the feed to broadcast. This may be done in many different ways, and specific instructions to each product will be available.

Other configurable devices

IP network cameras are not the only devices that support mobile coverage. CCTV, DVR, and NVR also have technologies that support remote access. The configuration of these devices is somewhat similar to the IP cameras.
