On a 1997 bmw 540i, what causes the ac heater blower to not work properly?

The ac heater blower works when you crank it in the morning, then after the car runs for about 15 minutes, shuts off and won't come back on.

Hi Eddie,

There is a good chance on your particular model that it is the blower fan resistor pack. They cost approx £50 and sit just behind the dash in the left hand side of the right footwell. It controls all the fan speeds. They have been known to fail internally causing erratic fan speeds and in some cases causing the fan to fail altogether.
So on a American car it would be the left of the passengers footwell low down behind the dash.
