Why are there different types of coaxial connectors?

From what I know, there are F-type connectors, BNC connectors, etc. Why can't there just be one kind of coaxial connector? What's the purpose of having a different kind of connector on the cable, if it does the same thing?

With respect to consumer electronics applications:

The basic types of coaxial cable connectors are generally associated with particular applications. F-type connectors are intended to be used for permanent (or semi-permanent connections) or where infrequent disconnections and reconnections are expected; they’re also commonly used for outdoor coaxial cable connections. Rca Phono style connectors and quarter turn, locking, quick-connect BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) connectors are used for applications where regular or periodic disconnections and reconnections are expected.

RCA phono style connectors are used for both analog and digital, audio- and RF-frequency interconnect applications, whereas BNC connectors, which are extremely common in professional audio, video and broadcasting applications, are rarely used in consumer electronics other than for analog video and—to a lesser extent—digital audio connections. In very rare circumstances you may see BNC-terminated coaxial interconnects used for SDI (Serial Digital Interface) connections in order to distribute (High Definition) digital video over coaxial cable in high-end residential applications.
